OpenAI Targets $1.25 Trillion Valuation in Pre-IPO Funding Push

The AI leader is reportedly negotiating a massive private capital raise that would shatter records for private company valuations and complicate the path to its public debut.

OpenAI is reportedly on the verge of closing a monumental private funding round that would value the company at $1.25 trillion, a figure that would make it the most valuable private entity in history. This development signals a strategic pivot away from an immediate public listing, favoring a massive capital injection to solidify its market position before any potential IPO.

According to sources familiar with the discussions, the round is being led by the investment firm Coatue alongside investors from the United Arab Emirates. The company aims to raise up to $30 billion at a pre-money valuation of $1.25 trillion. This structure allows the company to secure substantial liquidity while maintaining control over its growth trajectory during a critical phase of development.

The terms of this deal are not yet final, and negotiations remain ongoing. This current valuation target is slightly lower than the $1.4 trillion figure reported by Bloomberg one month ago, suggesting that the final number may still fluctuate as parties reach an agreement. The uncertainty highlights the complex nature of valuing a company that is growing at an unprecedented rate while operating in a highly competitive landscape.

A notable component of this potential deal involves the UAE investors, who may be coupling their financial commitment with a separate agreement to provide OpenAI with additional computing capacity. This arrangement would address one of the industry’s most significant bottlenecks, ensuring the AI lab has the infrastructure necessary to support its expanding models and user base.

If OpenAI successfully commands a valuation exceeding one trillion dollars, it would set a new benchmark for private companies. However, this achievement raises the stakes significantly for its forthcoming initial public offering. A higher private valuation typically requires a company to demonstrate even stronger growth metrics and profitability expectations to satisfy public shareholders, potentially delaying the listing or increasing the pressure on performance.

OpenAI had already taken steps toward a public debut by filing confidential paperwork for an IPO in June. This move came shortly after a previous funding round in March, which valued the ChatGPT developer at $852 billion on a post-money basis. The jump to a $1.25 trillion pre-money valuation represents a substantial increase in just a few months, reflecting the market’s intense appetite for AI leadership.

The implications of OpenAI’s high valuation extend to its primary rival, Anthropic, which is also preparing for a public offering. Many industry observers believe Anthropic’s IPO is imminent, with rumors suggesting a public S-1 filing could occur at any moment. The competitive dynamic between the two companies is intensifying as they both seek to establish dominance in the public markets.

Anthropic is reportedly seeking a valuation between $1.5 and $2 trillion for its public debut, according to CNBC. This target is ambitious, especially given that the company raised $65 billion at a $965 billion valuation in May, a round widely considered its final private financing before going public. Both companies filed confidential IPO paperwork in June, setting the stage for a potentially historic year in public offerings for the AI sector.

OpenAI has declined to comment on the current funding discussions. As the negotiations progress, the outcome will provide crucial insights into how investors are pricing AI dominance in 2026 and how the industry’s top players plan to finance their next phase of expansion.
